Programme of Events
Corona virus update
Tighter government restrictions across the South East of England from the 20th December mean that we have once again had to shelve outdoor events in accordance with the rules for Tier 4.
We will continue to run the popular “virtual” events most Wednesday evenings using the “Zoom” on-line meeting tool. These are publicised to members in advance via the group email. These are either run in conjunction with the evening’s outdoor activity (when rules allow) or may just be social occasions for chatting or sharing photographs.
The programme will be reviewed regularly as the pandemic develops with regular government updates. Please keep a close eye on the programme page and also monitor group email for further updates.
For further details, please email enquiries@stalbansadventuregroup.org.uk.
All events are arranged by group members on a voluntary basis and undertaken at your own risk.
or download the ics file here.

Lea Valley Walk - 3rd stage For the third stage of the Lea Valley walk we will cover around 13 miles from a start near East Hertford Railway Station, along the Cole Green Way, through the south side of Welwyn Garden City to the hospital, and then to Mill Green, passing near Hatfield, to Stanborough Lakes, Lemsford, Brocket Hall, Waterend Lane and Wheathampstead. We have an arrangement where drivers can drop passengers in Hertford and then drive to Wheathampstead to leave cars. We have a volunteer who can bring the drivers back to the start. There is an option for those who want to do a shorter walk to leave a car in Mill Green or at Stanborough Lakes. Suggest Rose Cafe on Railway Street, Hertford, as the base for passengers. Aim to drop passengers around 9.00am, and drivers can head to Wheathampstead and leave there around 9.30am to be back at Rose café hopefully with time to grab a quick coffee themselves. We will have a coffee/lunch stop at the Stanborough Lakes café along the way. |

Thames Pathway - Greenwich - Crayford Ness After about 21 months and over 200 miles, this section will bring us to the end of the Thames pathway and beyond.
The plan is to drive to Slade Green station (DA8 2NX) which is just off the A206, just west of the Dartford Crossing (south side). The aim is to catch the 9.35 am train which will get us into Greenwich just after 10 am. There is an earlier train at 9.21 which we could get if we are there for it.
We will then walk to the river and then along to Woolwich past the Thames Barrier and then along past Erith to Crayford ness and along the estuary of the river Darent back to Slade Green. This will be a fairly long 16 miles. This can be shortened to about 14 miles by leaving the Thames before Crayford ness.
We would need to leave St Albans/Hatfield by 8.00 am. Car sharing would be a definite advantage on this occasion. As I have an account for the Dartford crossing I will offer to drive and take up to three passengers. If you don’t have an account for the Dartford crossing, I believe you have up to 24 hours to pay by phone or website (about £2.50 each way).
Let me know if you are coming before next Saturday evening and whether you are willing to drive or would like a lift.
Also plan on taking packed lunch, drinks and waterproofs etc.

Cycle ride on the Chilterns Way Note change to published event. Colm will be leading a cycle ride on the Northern section of the Chilterns Way starting at Kimpton recreation ground at 10am. This has been postponed from March 10th when gusty conditions meant the planned ride was changed to a walk. Most of the cycle ride is on minor roads, but there is a 2.5 mile section on bridleway/track. This will be OK for mountain bikes and hybrids, but for those not wanting to abuse their road bike, there is a slightly longer on road alternative. This does involve a short section along a busy B road. The full loop is 38.5 miles. There are options to truncate the loop for a shorter ride of 21.5 or 31.5 miles. Those wanting a shorter ride will need to self navigate the truncated section (which is simple) and wait for those doing the main loop (if they wish).
We will probably stop for refreshment, but drink and a packed lunch advised. It will also be wise to take waterproofs and warm clothing.

Evening of 3 One-act plays at Redbourn Redbourn Players are presenting an evening of 3 One-Act Plays on Th. 23rd, Fri. 24th and Sat. 25th May starting at 7.30pm in Redbourn Village Hall. 1 ‘Joining the Club’ by David Tristram, a 20min play with 2 actors. 2 An abridged version of ‘Under Milk Wood’ by Dylan Thomas. The play is set in a radio recording studio where the actors are not content with just reading lines. They put on costumes and include actions. With more than 60 characters, all have to take on several roles as well as coping with the Welsh accent. There is constant movement, with numerous opportunities to forget who they are or where they should be, but hopefully over the next few weeks they’ll master it. At times, they also have to act as children. 3 ‘Strictly Sex Factor On Ice’ by David Tristram. This is one of the Little Grimley plays about a pretty unsuccessful drama group. Tickets:- £10 (conc. £8) from Pauline. As we need a small audience at the Wed. Dress Rehearsal there is an offer of £5 seats. The Dress Rehearsal is run as a performance, but there is no bar, just tea, coffee and cake. Geoff is running the bar on Thursday. |

Thames path Kew Bridge to Chelsea Bridge This next section of the Thames pathway takes us close to central London, with a few parks and gardens along the way. This section will be approximately 12 miles.
We will start on the south side of Kew Bridge at 10 am. There is free parking on the A307 Kew Road outside Kew Gardens on a Sunday. As Kew Gardens does not open until 10 am there should be spaces before then. For those wanting a pre walk Tea or Coffee there is SIFT Bakes & Brews nearby on Mortlake Terrace.
We will return using the underground from Pimlico to Kew on the Victoria and District lines. For those wanting a shorter walk it is possible to get the tube from Putney Bridge, although this is roughly at the half way point.
There is little to choose between using the M1/A1, A406 or M25/M4 in terms of driving time (around an hour). I will probably use the former route.
Let me know if you plan on coming and wish to lift share by next Friday.

Sunday Walk A walk in the Enfield area led by Gill and Bob. Meet for a 10.30 start at the front entrance of Oakwood tube station (Piccadilly Line, designed by Charles Holden). There is cheap parking at the station at weekends and street parking can be found nearby.
In a recent land use survey, Enfield has been rated as the fourth greenest of all London Boroughs. and this walk reflects that. This walk will link the following Country Parks: Trent Park, Hilly Fields, Forty Hall and Whitewebbs, though a little bit of road walking is unavoidable. Lunch will be at Myddleton House Gardens, the former home of the noted plantsman E.A. Bowles and now the HQ of the Lea Valley Country Park. There is a cafe and a nice picnic area on site. There will be an opportunity to explore the gardens before we move on. (The Pied Bull pub is also nearby but if anyone would like to go for that option, please contact us first as booking may be required). Return will be via our place for a cup of tea and we will then take the drivers back up to Oakwood to collect the cars.

Sunday walk Jon has had to cancel his planned Holmbury walk. In its place, Martin and Rosemary are planning a walk and would welcome anyone to join them. (We are going to cycle to the start of the walk, if anyone wants to do that bit too.) Our walk will start at 11am from Charlie’s Coffee Shop on Station Road in Wheathampstead (AL4 8BU – it’s at the low point of the road, close to the bridge over the river Lea). We will wander along the River Lea to Lemsford for Sunday lunch at one of the Lemsford pubs. We will return to Wheathampstead via Ayot Green and then along the Ayot Greenway. If anyone fancies a bike ride too, we will leave our house at 9.30am and cycle to Wheathampstead (takes around 45 mins). The route can be all on road or partly on tracks, depending if anyone with a road bike wants to join us. Just in case there are vast numbers wanting to join us, it would be helpful if you could you let us know as we might need to book a table for lunch. (But if you don’t see this message until Sunday morning and just want to turn up, please do come along…) |

Further details on the cave can be found at http://www.roystoncave.co.uk We have the opportunity of a private guided visit to the cave (indicative cost of £8 / person depending on numbers), which will be more convenient than joining one of the public sessions. Future Plans
If and when coronavirus restrictions are eased, we hope to run the following events in 2021:
- Camping trips.
- Weekends away to places where each household can book their own hotel accommodation.
- A bunkhouse weekend in Yorkshire. (This will only be possible if the rules allow groups to stay in dormitory-style accommodation.)
- The North Downs Way – our next STAG project. This 153 mile long distance footpath follows the chalk ridge of the North Downs, from Farnham to Dover, passing through the Surrey Hills and the Kent Downs Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Once we are able to walk as a group again, this route offers a number of day walks initially (well served by public transport) followed by the possibility of some overnights as we get further into Kent.
- A delayed celebration of the group’s 70th anniversary.
