After 3 days following waterways through London, stage 4 of the Shakespeare Way departs from the Grand Union and heads north-west through Black Park towards Farnham Common. There, travel enthusiasts might like to extend their trip to take in Egypt, famed for its 12th century church but alas devoid of pyramids.

A number of St Albans Adventure Group are walking the Shakespeare Way this year (from the Globe to Stratford upon Avon) and fancy seeing the play Love’s Labours Lost at the Globe on Saturday August 8th at 7.30pm. We are going to go for standing tickets (if it rains we get wet!) at £5 / £10 (no difference in where you stand, but there are a limited number of the cheaper tickets available). There are alternative seats from £25 (partial view) up to £85 if preferred.

We’ll hopefully gather together for something to eat in the area beforehand (details nearer the time). For now, please book your tickets – and do let  know Rosemary know so she has an idea how many are going. Everyone is welcome to this, whether or not you are walking the Shakespeare Way.

After the talk on our local air ambulance last year, now is your chance to visit the airbase. This is for a Visitor Centre Experience with Mark Borg, who is a very knowledgeable volunteer about all things air ambulance! We cannot guarantee you will see the helicopter as it may be out on a mission, but if it is at North Weald, hopefully we can see it. Afterwards, you can either have lunch at a local garden centre, or if you bring a packed lunch, you can join Matthew for an afternoon walk in Epping Forest. We will email a couple of weeks before to see who wants to come to the Airbase and if you want to join the walk. I can then provide details of how to access the airfield and find the air ambulance to those who are driving.

Meet outside the Town Hall at 8pm for a cultural walk around central St Albans visiting the Blue Plaques commemorating the amazing men and women who have significantly contributed to St Albans. Celebrities include: Sarah Churchill (1160 – 1744) who commissioned Marlborough Almshouses; Nathaniel Cotton (1706 – 1788) an early mental health practitioner, Arthur Melbourne-Cooper (1874-1961) a photographer and film-maker and Stephen William Hawking.

The walk is likely to take about an hour.

A 7.5 mile walk starting in Ickleford outside The Old George pub (SG5 3UX) at 10am.
This is a flat walk, across open countryside, so easy going to get the muscles working again after all the Christmas excesses.

Parking is on the road by the church on Arlesey Road or on Chambers Lane. If there are no spaces, then there’s a free public car park further up Chambers Lane by the play park.

Please bring a drink. There’ll be the opportunity to have refreshments in the Old George pub after the walk.

Return via river boat to Bankside (Thames Clippers / Uber have a ½hrly service) from Putney Pier.

A presentation on Jenny and Patrick’s trip to Varanasi, the spiritual capital of India, and to Rishikesh for a four week yoga course. There will hopefully be time to learn/practise a few simple yoga postures so bring a mat if you have one.

The car assisted ride will start at 10.30 am from the Harlow garden centre (CM17 9LD) in Hastingswood.  It is just to the west of M11 Junc 7 off the A414.  The Cafe in the garden centre is open at 10 am for those wanting pre ride refreshment.  Free parking is available in the large car park by the garden centre.  We will ride a loop eastwards towards Chelmsford on quite lanes.  Exact route will be decided on the day. Bring food and drink, although we may stop somewhere for refreshment.

An evening walk of approximately 2 miles from the Plough PH in Sleapshyde (AL4 0SE, GR 202 069) starting at 7.30 prompt.  Plenty of parking in the pub car park.  Note, that as we are now in September, the walk will finish in heavy dusk, so a torch may be useful.

A three mile walk through the grounds of Rothamsted Research. This self-guided walking trail has been set up by Rothamsted Research to help people understand how their researchers are transforming agriculture to help feed the world more sustainably. There will be a number of information points on the way round (bring your reading glasses!).

Meet 7.30pm outside The White Horse pub, on the corner of Redbourn Lane and Hatching Green, Harpenden AL5 2JP. The pub is happy for us to use their car park while we are walking, but if the car park is full, there should be parking on Hatching Green. We will retire to the pub after the walk.

Meet in the Bowling Green Lane Car Park, Bowling Green, Buntingford, SG9 9DF. The car park is free on Sundays. The walk will start at 10am.

Please bring a drink and a packed lunch. We have the choice of the Fox and Duck pub or The Buntingford Coffee Shop for refreshments after the walk.

Ian will lead a 3-4 mile evening walk from Bricket wood Station car park (AL2 3LN) starting at 7.30 pm.  Afterwards we can take refreshment at the nearby Gate PH.

A walk of approximately 4 miles around Panshanger park between WGC and Hertford starting at 7.30 pm.  We will meet in the car park off Thieves Lane, which should be free in the evening (GR 307 125, SG14 2NA).

There is alternative parking on Old Thieves Lane, which is parallel to the A414 and is accessed from Valeside,  which is the first left turn from the A414 after the roundabout for Hertingfordbury (coming from Hatfield).

We will take refreshments at the White Hart in Hertingfordbury after the walk (9 – 9.30 pm)

Circular walk around WGC originally devised for its centenary in 2020.  Mainly through countryside, but with a couple of short urban stretches.

Both options start outside the Waggoners PH in Ayot Green (AL6 9AA, GR 222 139) at 10 am.  We will walk around WGC in the anti-clockwise direction (south first).  The shorter option will finish in Tewin (about 8.5 miles). This will require a car(s) to be pre-positioned in Tewin before the walk starts.  Therefore, I will need numbers for the shorter option in advance.

Packed lunch required for full walk and drink required for both options.  Refreshment at end.

Sunset is at 9.13pm so we shouldn’t have to ride in the dark, but bring lights just in case.

A 12-mile walk in the Chilterns from Wendover to Great Hampden. Meet 10.00 for 10.30 departure from Rumsey’s Chocolaterie in The Old Bank, Wendover. Bring sandwiches for lunch although there is the possibility of a short pub stop at Great Hampden.

The route would lend itself to a shorter option, say 7 miles, so please speak to Martin if you would prefer this.

A walking tour around the sculptures by well known sculptors in the University of Hertfordshire, College Lane campus.  The tour will be lead and narrated by Debbie.  Parking is available towards the end of Bullens Green Lane, Colney Heath which is a Col de Sac (AL4 0QS).  From there it is a about a 0.5 mile walk to the campus.  Afterwards we can go the Crocked Billet PH in Colney Heath for refreshments.

Neil Kirby is the founder of the charity Red Rubber Ball Foundation, which sponsors children of very poor Kenyan families through secondary school. Neil has spent much time in Kenya, and he will tell us about the history, geography and politics of the country and the reasons the majority of its poorest members cannot escape poverty. This will give the context for the work of his charity.

A 6 mile walk lead by Susan, starting from the car park behind the Bull PH in Wheathampstead  (AL4 8BN), starting at the slightly later time of 10.30 am.

A 3 mile walk from Ridge near South Mimms EN6 3LH (GR 215 004),  starting at 7.30 pm. Meet near the Old Guinea Pub,  which we can visit after the walk.

Our annual Barbeque hosted by Viv.  Lets hope for good weather.  Look out for e-mail regarding food etc during the week before the event.

On the 14^th August meet in the car park on Redbourn Common by the cricket pavilion at 7.15pm so we can start at 7.30pm on a 3 mile walk. We will pass by the Redbournbury Watermill, Hammond End Farm and the Harpenden Golf Club before heading back to Redbourn. There is an option for non-walkers to join us in the Hollybush Pub https://hollybushredbourn.co.uk/ around 9.00pm. If you are joining this outing please use the Meet & Greet option on WhatsApp to let Stewart know you are coming.

Meet 10am in Alconbury Weston, just off the A1 near Huntingdon for a ride of around 42 miles. Dropping onto the fens, we will visit the lowest point in the UK at Holme Fen Posts: 3m (9ft) below sea level! We will then cross into Northamptonshire for a few small hills before a final exhilarating descent back to Alconbury Weston. Parking should be possible in Hamerton Road by the brook, grid ref TL 177770. Bring lunch.

Meet in the car park by the recreation ground in Sandridge, St Albans (AL4 9DA) for departure at 7.30pm. Walk of about 3 miles, followed by refreshments in the Green Man.

Evening walk from Ayot St Lawrence, AL6 9DA. Meet outside the old church for 7.30 departure. Afterwards at the Brocket Arms.

Brocket Arms PH, Ayot St Lawrence

Meet at St Albans City Station at 9:30. We will take the train to Flitwick arriving at 10:15. The walk is a 21km (13 miles) loop out towards Wrest Park returning to Flitwick station to catch the train back to St Albans.  Bring a packed lunch and drink.

There option to join the train at Harpenden or other stations. If it is inconvenient for people to get the train meet at Flitwick station
There are options to do a shorter walk.

If you intend to go by train please wait until the group has gathered before buying a ticket as there are discounts for groups.

4-5 mile walk lead by Sue Appel. Start at 7:30 pm Park in School Lane, Bricketwood and meet at the old Fox pub which is now closed AL2 3XU.

Afterwards, we can go to the Gate pub which will be the other side of Bricketwood station.  4-5 miles. Bring a torch.
